The mission of the Film Studies minor is to increase students’ ability to think critically and communicate clearly about the relationship between images, ideas, narrative, and sound. Film Studies produces a media literacy that will complement any major at IU South Bend. The Film Studies minor is open to all students and will serve them well as a discipline that will enrich the way they see and interpret the world.
IU South Bend’s interdisciplinary film Studies minor provides students with a broad media literacy education on the major art form of cinema. The Film Studies minor approaches cinema as an artistic medium, a material practice, and a cultural artifact. Students in the Film Studies minor will become scholars, critical consumers, and perhaps even producers of a socially significant and constantly evolving medium. Courses in the Film Studies minor provide students with a solid foundation in the history of U.S. and international film, and the aesthetics, techniques, ideologies, and theories of the moving image.
